Artist Statement
What distinguishes the spectacular animal displays of contemporary artists such as Mark Dion, Damien Hirst, and Maurizio Cattelan from the taxidermic specimens and landscaped dioramas that are interpreted as scientific displays in the context of the natural history museum? How and why does each kind of display generate different ways of understanding animals and nature, as well as specific reactions from the audiences that view these displays? These photos of the preparation of taxidermy specimens map the dividing lines and points of convergence between art and science in order to understand how our representational practices frame animals as subjects of human knowledge.
